In July 2023, guided by our adventurous spirits, we explored the fascinating Orkney Islands, a tiny archipelago off the northern tip of Scotland. On our final day, we visited the northern isle of Westray. As we came off the ferry and drove over the brow of a long hill, the village of Pierowall was spread below along the shores of a sheltered bay of the North Sea. I fell in love immediately with the light, the scenery and the remoteness. Before the day was out we’d made the life altering decision to buy a house complete with a studio in the garden.
